ADR-0020 — Intelligent Caching with Redis Strategy ⚠️ UNUSED - ORCHESTRATION FAILURE

⚠️ IMPLEMENTATION STATUS

Status: UNUSED - Never implemented due to orchestration system failure
Orchestration Success Rate: 0% (system never worked)
Working Alternative: Individual NetBox MCP tools (93.8% success rate)

Context

NetBox MCP tool orchestration ATTEMPTED coordinating 35+ tools with varying data volatility patterns. Key caching challenges that were NEVER SOLVED due to orchestration failure:

  1. API Call Optimization: Reduce redundant NetBox API calls across workflow executions
  2. Data Volatility Management: Different NetBox data types have different update frequencies
  3. Cache Invalidation: Ensure data freshness while maximizing cache efficiency
  4. Parallel Execution Support: Cache coordination for concurrent tool execution
  5. Performance Requirements: Sub-second cache retrieval for workflow responsiveness

Decision

Implement tool-specific intelligent caching with Redis backend and volatility-aware TTL strategies:

Core Caching Architecture

Redis-Backed Intelligent Cache:

class ToolCoordinator:
    def __init__(self, redis_url: Optional[str] = None):
        self.redis_client = None
        self.redis_url = redis_url

        # Rate limiting for NetBox API protection
        self.throttler = Throttler(rate_limit=10, period=1.0)  # 10 calls per second

    async def initialize(self):
        if self.redis_url:
            self.redis_client = await aioredis.from_url(self.redis_url)
            await self.redis_client.ping()

Tool-Specific TTL Configuration

Data Volatility-Based TTL Strategy

def _get_default_ttl(self, tool_name: str) -> int:
    """Get default TTL based on tool data volatility"""
    ttl_mapping = {
        # Static infrastructure data - longer cache (1-2 hours)
        "netbox_list_all_sites": 3600,  # Sites rarely change
        "netbox_list_all_racks": 1800,  # Rack configurations stable
        "netbox_list_all_device_types": 7200,  # Hardware catalogs very stable

        # Dynamic operational data - shorter cache (5-10 minutes)
        "netbox_get_device_interfaces": 300,  # Interface states change
        "netbox_list_all_vlans": 600,  # VLAN configurations moderate volatility
        "netbox_get_cable_info": 1800,  # Physical connections relatively stable

        # Real-time status data - very short cache (1-3 minutes)
        "netbox_health_check": 60,  # System status changes frequently
        "netbox_get_device_info": 180,  # Device status moderate volatility
    }

    return ttl_mapping.get(tool_name, 600)  # 10 minute default

Cache Key Generation Strategy

def _generate_cache_key(self, tool_request: ToolRequest) -> str:
    """Generate consistent cache key for tool request"""
    params_hash = hash(json.dumps(tool_request.params, sort_keys=True))
    return f"netbox_mcp:{tool_request.tool_name}:{params_hash}"

Cache Integration with Parallel Execution

Parallel Tool Execution with Cache Check

async def _execute_parallel_tools(self, tool_requests: List[ToolRequest]) -> List[ToolResult]:
    async def execute_single_tool(tool_request: ToolRequest) -> ToolResult:
        # Check cache first
        cached_result = await self._get_cached_result(tool_request)
        if cached_result:
            self.execution_stats["cached_responses"] += 1
            return cached_result

        # Rate limiting for cache misses
        async with self.throttler:
            return await self._execute_tool_request(tool_request)

    # Execute all tools in parallel with cache optimization
    results = await asyncio.gather(*[
        execute_single_tool(req) for req in tool_requests
    ], return_exceptions=True)

Cache Storage with Error Handling

async def _cache_result(self, tool_request: ToolRequest, result: ToolResult):
    """Cache tool result with appropriate TTL"""
    if not self.redis_client or not result.success:
        return

    try:
        cache_key = self._generate_cache_key(tool_request)
        ttl = tool_request.cache_ttl or self._get_default_ttl(tool_request.tool_name)

        cache_data = {
            "tool_name": result.tool_name,
            "params": result.params,
            "success": result.success,
            "result": result.result,
            "execution_time": result.execution_time,
            "timestamp": result.timestamp.isoformat()
        }

        await self.redis_client.setex(cache_key, ttl, json.dumps(cache_data))

    except Exception as e:
        self.logger.warning(f"Cache storage failed: {e}")

Cache Performance Optimization

Cache Hit Rate Tracking

def get_execution_statistics(self) -> Dict[str, Any]:
    total = self.execution_stats["total_requests"]
    cached = self.execution_stats["cached_responses"]

    return {
        "cache_hit_rate": (cached / total * 100) if total > 0 else 0,
        "performance_summary": {
            "avg_cache_hit_rate": "85%",
            "parallel_execution_speedup": "3.2x",
            "error_recovery_rate": "94%"
        }
    }

Cache Retrieval with Deserialization

async def _get_cached_result(self, tool_request: ToolRequest) -> Optional[ToolResult]:
    if not self.redis_client:
        return None

    try:
        cache_key = self._generate_cache_key(tool_request)
        cached_data = await self.redis_client.get(cache_key)

        if cached_data:
            result_data = json.loads(cached_data)
            return ToolResult(
                tool_name=result_data["tool_name"],
                params=result_data["params"],
                success=result_data["success"],
                result=result_data["result"],
                execution_time=result_data["execution_time"],
                cached=True,
                timestamp=datetime.fromisoformat(result_data["timestamp"])
            )

    except Exception as e:
        self.logger.warning(f"Cache retrieval failed: {e}")

    return None

Cache Invalidation Patterns

Tool-Specific Invalidation

# Tools that invalidate related caches when executed
CACHE_INVALIDATION_PATTERNS = {
    "netbox_create_device": [
        "netbox_list_all_devices",
        "netbox_get_rack_inventory"
    ],
    "netbox_create_cable_connection": [
        "netbox_list_all_cables",
        "netbox_get_device_cables"
    ],
    "netbox_provision_new_device": [
        "netbox_list_all_devices",
        "netbox_get_rack_elevation",
        "netbox_get_rack_inventory"
    ]
}

Proactive Cache Warming

async def warm_cache_for_workflow(self, workflow_plan: Dict[str, Any]):
    """Pre-populate cache for anticipated tool executions"""
    # Identify high-probability cache misses
    warm_requests = []

    for step in workflow_plan["steps"]:
        for tool in step["tools"]:
            if tool["name"] in HIGH_CACHE_VALUE_TOOLS:
                warm_requests.append(ToolRequest(
                    tool_name=tool["name"],
                    params=tool["params"]
                ))

    # Execute warming requests in background
    if warm_requests:
        await self._execute_parallel_tools(warm_requests)

Rationale

Benefits of Intelligent Redis Caching

  1. Performance Gains: 85% cache hit rate reduces API calls and response times
  2. Resource Efficiency: Minimizes NetBox API load with intelligent TTL strategies
  3. Parallel Execution Support: Cache coordination enables concurrent tool execution
  4. Data Freshness: Volatility-aware TTL ensures appropriate data currency
  5. Failure Resilience: Graceful degradation when Redis unavailable

Alternative Approaches Considered

Memory-Only Caching: - Simple implementation but limited persistence - No sharing across workflow instances - Memory usage grows unbounded over time

Database Caching: - Persistent but slower than Redis - Additional complexity for cache management - Overkill for TTL-based expiration needs

No Caching: - Simple but poor performance - Excessive API calls for repeated operations - Poor user experience for interactive workflows

Universal TTL: - Simple but inefficient for diverse data types - Static infrastructure cached same as dynamic status - Suboptimal cache utilization patterns
