ADR-0025 — Project Requirements Package Framework ✅ IMPLEMENTED

Status

Accepted - Successfully implemented in Phase 4 deepagents solution Implementation: DeepAgents Framework Commit: 18cb297a8f3f0ccdec3b4b9c52d96d9a50e4c8dd

Context

The deepagents NetBox implementation faced challenges in dependency management and project configuration consistency. As the framework evolved from a simple CLI replacement to a sophisticated orchestration system, several architectural concerns emerged:

Development Workflow Challenges

  • Dependency Drift: Manual dependency management leading to version inconsistencies
  • Environment Setup Complexity: Difficult onboarding for new developers and users
  • Configuration Inconsistency: Varied setups across development, testing, and production
  • Documentation Gaps: Insufficient guidance for proper environment configuration

Framework Evolution Requirements

  • Professional Package Structure: Transition from script-based to framework-based architecture
  • Reproducible Environments: Consistent setup across different systems and use cases
  • Modern Python Standards: Adoption of contemporary Python packaging best practices
  • Extensibility Support: Framework design enabling community contributions and extensions

Decision

Implement Project Requirements Package (PRP) Framework establishing professional Python packaging standards and reproducible environment management for the deepagents ecosystem:

        self.environment_configs = self.load_environment_configs()

    def setup_environment(self, environment: str = "development"):
        """
        Automated environment setup with validation
        """
        config = self.environment_configs[environment]

        # Validate environment requirements
        self.validate_python_version(config['python_version'])
        self.validate_dependencies(config['dependencies'])

        # Configure environment-specific settings
        self.configure_caching(config['cache_settings'])
        self.configure_monitoring(config['monitoring_settings'])
        self.configure_logging(config['logging_settings'])

        return EnvironmentSetup(environment, config)

# config/environment.yaml
environments:
  development:
    python_version: ">=3.9"
    cache_settings:
      enabled: true
      ttl_hours: 0.25  # 15 minutes for development
    monitoring_settings:
      enabled: false

    monitoring_settings:
      enabled: true
      metrics_endpoint: "http://prometheus:9090"
    logging_settings:
      level: "INFO"

3. Package Installation Automation

# setup.py - Installation automation with dependency resolution
from setuptools import setup, find_packages
import os

def read_requirements(filename):
    """Read requirements from file with environment variable substitution"""
    requirements = []
    filepath = os.path.join('requirements', filename)

    if os.path.exists(filepath):
        with open(filepath, 'r') as f:
            for line in f:
                line = line.strip()
                if line and not line.startswith('#'):
                    # Environment variable substitution
                    line = os.path.expandvars(line)
                    requirements.append(line)

    return requirements

setup(
    name="deepagents-netbox",
    packages=find_packages(),
    install_requires=read_requirements('base.txt'),
    extras_require={
        'dev': read_requirements('development.txt'),
        'monitoring': read_requirements('monitoring.txt'),
        'netbox': read_requirements('netbox.txt'),
        'all': (read_requirements('development.txt') +
                read_requirements('monitoring.txt') +
                read_requirements('netbox.txt'))
    },
    entry_points={
        'console_scripts': [
            'deepagents-netbox=deepagents.netbox.cli:main',
        ],
    },
    python_requires='>=3.9',
)

4. Configuration Management System

class ConfigurationManager:
    def __init__(self, config_dir: str = "config"):
        self.config_dir = config_dir
        self.loaded_configs = {}

    def load_configuration_profile(self, profile: str):
        """
        Load environment-specific configuration with validation
        """
        config_file = os.path.join(self.config_dir, f"{profile}.yaml")

        with open(config_file, 'r') as f:
            config = yaml.safe_load(f)

        # Validate configuration schema
        self.validate_configuration_schema(config)

        # Apply environment variable overrides
        config = self.apply_environment_overrides(config)

        self.loaded_configs[profile] = config
        return config

    def validate_configuration_schema(self, config: dict):
        """
        Ensure configuration meets framework requirements
        """
        required_sections = ['agent', 'cache', 'monitoring', 'netbox']

        for section in required_sections:
            if section not in config:
                raise ConfigurationError(f"Missing required section: {section}")
